Hope Is Full of Smoke

today we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that incorporates at least one of the following: (1) the villanelle form, (2) lines taken from an outside text, and/or (3) phrases that oppose each other in some way. If you can use two elements, great – and if you can do all three.

Hope Is Full Of Smoke

5 April 2019

The hope only of empty men

And still we search to fill existence

There will be no smoking in the gas chamber

The push to be better than the next

If you aren’t producing you are impotent

The hope only of empty men

Questioning the insanity

Brings questions of our integrity

There will be no smoking in the gas chamber

I’ve been wounded, it doesn’t matter (Self induced they’d say)

I’ve sacrificed, is it noted in the ledger  ? ( you should be honored, lout)

The hope only of empty men

Our orders are given from towers in the sky (their names emblazoned)

Mindless obedience is the standard (independent thought is slander)

There will be no smoking in the gas chamber

Will we wake before we participate

Or will our children study our newest atrocities

The hope only of empty men

There will be no smoking in the gas chamber

(Thanks T.S. and Jimi )
