Day 9

Before I drop this on you, I am a podcaster and I run the KDOI Podcast at kdoipodcasting.com. You can get it on all your podcatchers and my current season we are talking about artistic terms and how they impact artists and what they think about them. Well this year I am doing NaPoWriMo to who my listeners that yes I do practice what I preach, I will be doing at least 1 if not more episodes about this experience. It is not the first time I have done 30 in 30, and I want to share with everyone my experience. So stay tuned.

Our (optional) prompt for the day asks you to engage in another kind of cross-cultural exercise, as it is inspired by the work of Sei Shonagon, a Japanese writer who lived more than 1000 years ago. She wrote a journal that came to be known as The Pillow Book. In it, she recorded daily observations, court gossip, poems, aphorisms, and musings, including lists with titles like “Things That Have Lost Their Power,” “Adorable Things,” and “Things That Make Your Heart Beat Faster.” Today, I’d like to challenge you to write your own Sei Shonagon-style list of “things.” What things? Well, that’s for you to decide!

Let Me Count The Ways

9 April 2019

How many times have we sat here

looking at each other through these pages

You over there – feeling great, having a few brews

or toking on the splif

Maybe truly down and out looking for someone worse than you

so you can compare your spiral and see how close to the edge you have come

Maybe you picked up the book in your tobacco stained fingers

from someone who knew me and needed to offload this because they were moving or wanted to remove bad chi from their apartment

Maybe you caught something online and somehow my writing made it through the either to your eyeballs

Its okay- you are here now – think what you want

you see me in what ever way makes you feel superior

crazy guy with an on again off again relationship with facial hair

Another proud poor imitation of Bukowski

If you thumb through my works

there is no pretense – its all laid out for you

I do bite, but probably not you because you aren’t my type

I’ll sit an wait till you are done skimming

I’ve nowhere to go, the coffee shop closes at 10

ask your questions I’m not embarrassed

Yes the stories are mostly true

You are right I should be dead, many times over

Even better you probably shouldn’t introduce me to your artsy friend

I’ll write four poems secretly dedicated to her and then leave a post it note detailing how really it is her and ot me that is screwed up, I even have charts to show it

My favorite answer to your question is Yes at one time I held unsavory beliefs – I was  homophobic, racist, elitist, bigot, right winger, fundamental christian, punk, poet, snob, slut, suicidal, sadist and all the other things you have read

I’m all those things and today I am none of them

I’m just a man

trying for his family

searching for a future that I can appreciate

and feel good leaving to my children

Not so complicated, not so exciting

and yet more alive and active than ever

stay tuned
