Not Meant To Be

Day 23

Hello reader, just a side note here, I’ll be putting these poems on my podcast in May and discussing my journey. The podcast is KDOI Podcasting click on the link, there are 3 seasons worth of art, discussion, interviews projects and more.

And now for our daily prompt (optional, as always)! Taking a cue from Bishop, I’d like to challenge you today to write a poem about an animal. If you’d like to take a look at some other poems for inspiration, you might like James Dickey’s “The Dusk of Horses,” or Tennyson’s “The Eagle.”

Not Meant To Be

23 April 2019

He was used as an object lesson

we were to drop our “selfishness”

and ensure his survival

The tepid beast whimpered through the night

As mother feigned allergies and

due to dander and the fathers coveted aftershave

Adopting this frail canine was to teach the brothers

how to nurture and not quit

as the fiend lost another job

and this pushed our silver lining below the murky dividing river

Learning that we were to leave the parsonage within a month

my anxiety set my ulcers to boil over with bile and acid

So man’s best friend became the wisdom found in failure

and disappointment

Obidiah, I never knew your fate

but you escaped the fiend

and I hope absolution

was a trick your new human companions taught
